Andropov Yuriy Vladimirovich

(1915-1984)

KGB chairman

Successfully survived the Stalin period and stepped into diplomatic services in 1953. In 1954 worked as ambassador in Budapest. His advisory during the revolution got him into the Central Committee. He became the KGB chief in 1967. He reorganized and unified the networks of the satellite-states to provide better information. He is known for the introduction of "psychuskas", special treatment centers for interrogation and jailing. The number of these institutes rose ten times during his time. He also planned the invasion into CSSR. He was Brezhnev's close friend and so he accompanied his rise. After his death he took over his place for two years. But he was seriously ill by that time and died short time later.
