Studied in Cambridge, where he became communist. Founded the organization "Apostles" together with A.Blunt. In the early 1930s he was contacted by the Anglo-German society via a Soviet officer - Wolfgang Adler.
1936-39 worked for BBC, two years for wartime propaganda and MI-5. His peak was that he reached the positions of Philby's second secretary in the US. But he had to flee with Maclean to Russia after some a series of disclosures threatening their activities.
