Dzerzhinski Feliks Edmundovich

(1877-1926)

Cheka founder

After finishing university he was send to Siberia. There he gained respect and after his escape he was send there again. He met Lenin and Stalin in 1896. Lenin was said to be amused and Stalin scared. Dzerzhinskiy was a hard-line Marxist and was very talented. He helped to throw over the czarism and founded the Cheka. He created the image of a dark empire. Cheka moved to Lyublanka, Moscow in 1918. He chose his workmen by simple characteristics: low intelligence, brutality and absolute loyalty. He reformed the Cheka into GPU in 1922. Although he didn't seek for another position and co-operated with Stalin, the leader was afraid of him. He was intelligent and he knew Stalin since his first appearance. But he underrated Stalin. He was dismissed in 1926 and suffered a heart attack. Steady Stalin's doctors offered help and Dzerzhinskiy was dead in a couple of hours.
