Soviet intelligence officer

1982-85 the KGB London department chief. He worked as a double agent since 1974 for MI6 and provided valuable product since his escape in May 1985 shortly after the KGB suspected him to be a leak. (Later was revealed how this escape from downtown city of Moscow to Finland's border took place).
He was the one to notice MI6 about Bettaney who was about to defect. The British arrested him, but the trials following brought up a wide range of law-violation by the intelligence services (mainly MI5 following UK citizens). The trials issued the 1989 Secret Service Act. (these trials also included testimonies of Cathy Massiter After his overrun 31 diplomats were declared "persona non grata" and the Russian side answered in the same way.
All in all Gordievskiy was one of the most valuable assets in the 1980s for the UK and US secret services. His product helped catch numerous agents and recovered the broken image of the UK service scene from the 50s and 60s.
