Hoover Edgar John

(1895-1971)

FBI chief

He entered the Bureau of Investigation in 1918 and changed to the FBI in 1924. After his election he granted, that the FBI would act apolitical.
He became famous due to his work and the time he was active - 47 years. His first successes came in the fight against the organized crime. But he was not so good at fighting the German agents during the war. The English said, that he had been too inpatient in observations and was contented with the "small fish". During the cold war, he mainly arrested the Russian agents flowing to America.
He pursued communists, pacifists, students, demonstrators, colored and human rights fighters. His known project Cointelpro often used wide spreading, illegal bugging and infiltration. He no longer allowed women or colored inside the FBI. That became the main target of his opponents what made him to cancel the Cointelpro operations in 1971. After that, he rather resigned.
In 1993 some information about his homosexuality and Mafia blackmailing appeared. They remain doubtful.
