British diplomat (working for the USSR)
He studied in Cambridge where he met K.Philby, G.Burgess and A.Blunt. He and the two latter were homosexual, what affected their further activities. They all sought an alternative for the political system and they found it in communism. During their studies in Cambridge all were contacted by various people from the USSR and could be turned over to stay in touch with them. Basically, the Soviets were waiting till all of them reached a position that would make useful.During the war Maclean worked on the foreign affairs ministry and delivered information to Russia. In 1944 he became secretary of the embassy in Washington and he was heading Commission for co-ordination of American, Canadian and British atomic research. The Soviets liked that very much.
The suspects grow bigger and in 1951 he was accused of espionage what brought a big affair. The deal was rescued by K.Philby who warned Burgess. He alarmed Blunt and Maclean. Moscow recalled them all but Blunt refused to come back, he stayed in America. Back in Russia, they proclaimed they were defectors and thus they saved Blunt and Philby from further examinations. Maclean's family got into Russia in 1953 through a Swiss connection.
After 10 years Philby returned to Russia and the whole "Cambridge network" was dismissed with the reveal of Blunt in 1979.
