Petrov Vladimir

(1907-1966)

Soviet defector

He began his career in the Navy and later he joined the KGB. After several functions since 1954 he commanded the actions in Australia. His defection in the same year was probably motivated by the Australian way of life, football and fear. Just before his defection, as a close fellow of the late Beriya, he was summoned to Moscow and he might have been afraid of following Beriya's way - being shot.
Petrov handed over information about Soviet espionage activities in Australia. He was the first to point at a possible double, Philby, but no one took it seriously.
