Harold Adrian Russel (Kim); Soviet agent
He was born in India and since 1929 he studied at Cambridge where he'd joined the pro-soviet group (consisting of Blunt, Maclean and Burgess). Later they all became members of communistic cells and in the 30s they were approached by the Soviet secret service. So was Philby's wife, Alica Kohlmann, an Austrian radical left-wing which escaped prison by marrying Philby. After finishing university he worked as corespondent in Spain and worked for the NKVD in Franco's army. He worked as journalist after his return to London. He joined the MI-6 in 1940 and he was a high placed officer in the V.division (Pyrenees region). By the end of the War he was a serious candidate for the Chief's post.
He became the head of the IX.division (counterintelligence against Russians). So he was able to help his real employers. He was almost certainly responsible for the Volkov affair. Volkov had announced his defection, so Philby was send to take him to Istanbul. Before he arrived, Volkov was mysteriously kidnapped.
He worked as in Washington as contact officer in 1949-51. He became the object of some suspicions but the MI-6 stood fully behind him. But he was forced to resign to his position when his communistic activities of the 30s came out. In 1956 he was sent to Beirut as a journalist. In 1962 he was informed by the KGB that the CIA had picked up his track and thus he fled to the USSR. He worked in the KGB headquarters, but later he became an alcoholic and lived under depression.
MI-6 played a bad role in this affair. Therefor, it's suspected that they send him to the unstable Beirut to ease his leave. After the escape of Maclean and Burgess his emigration prevented further examinations.
