Australia

Australia

Until the end of the Second World War the services were under the control of Great Britain, no own one was active. First after 1945 a new organization was founded - ASIO (Australian Secret and Intelligence Organization). Its main purpose was to protect Australia for Japan. In the beginning of ASIO, R.Hollis (MI-5) helped to build up the structure.
In 1950 Charles Spry moved from the army intelligence to ASIO and continued the cooperation with MI-5 and MI-6. ASIO discovered many soviet agents and in 1954 they could win V.Petrov for their services. Another agent - Valeriy Ivanov - was in close connection to the labour party and after revealing the contact to the prime minister, some ministers had to resign.
ASIO was able to proof Japanese actions against Australia, West Europe and USA. ASIO is controlled by chief inspector for security and intelligence services and by special bureau of Australian parliament.
