One of the most dangerous secret services. DS (Drzavna Segurnost - State Security) was founded in 1949 under the influence of KGB, which led the training of new agents. DS had done the dirty work for the KGB. Often, they killed, supported terrorism and drug business. They co-operated by the try to assassin Pop Paul II in 1981. They even tried to win western journalist for their purposes.
DS was known to eliminate any infiltrating or defecting agents. Vladimir Kostov, a defector form 1977, wrote a book about these practices called Bulgarian umbrella. It describes the hunt for Gregori Markov a Bulgarian emigrant who worked for BBC and Radio Free Europe. He was killed in a very adventurous way. One rainy evening he was given a lethal dose of poison hidden in the top of a umbrella. He died three weeks later. It's clear, that this happened due to his anticommunist activity.
Ludmila Zivkov played a significant role in making contact in Latin America.
After their reduction of today DS is composed of over 6,000 employees.
