The everlasting threats from Russia and Germany caused the founding of their secret service long time ago. France and England became their main supporters. The biggest success was the revelation of the Enigma secret, mainly supported by J.Sosnowsky, which led to major abridgement of the war. Poland was about to continue its cooperation with the West after the war, but it became a satellite of the USSR and KGB advisors led the founding of the new service SB (Sluzba Bezpieczenstwa). So there was no chance to maintain the former orientation. SB achieved a major success by gaining secret microfilms with USA weaponry plans from M.Zacharsky.
UB in an another part of the system. They supported the anti-communistic movement. But it was heavy infiltrated and they could need the money. In the 80s the counterintelligence belonged to the system. It fought against the opposition, but only minor wins were reached in spite of strong support from the StB, KGB and other 'friends'. They showed their claws in the brutal assassination of the priest J.Popieluszky in 1984. The killers were penalized but no connections to the service were revealed. After the fall of communism radical changes were made, but another infiltration by the KGB (AFB) is supposed.
