Beside the private detective offices, a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI, 1908) was founded. Its objective was to fight the crime and the Mafia. In 1924 E.Hoover, probably due to the founding of Soviet Union reorganized the company.
The counter office developed very slowly. The official founding of it is dated 1939. It took several time till they worked out, but after the war, they caught many of the soviet agents.
The FBI changed its position to respect the law after the Watergate, when the whole bureau was controlled. After that, they aimed mainly on fighting inland terrorism.
The Pearl Harbor raid was followed by the founding of OSS (Office of Strategic Services), an army service, subordinated to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The only director, W.Donovan, collected a huge amount of capable staff, who became the core of the later CIA. The OSS, being a war organization, was dismissed by H.Truman in 1945.
With the beginning of the cold war, the second largest service was created, the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency). This step was necessary, looking at the massive Russian activity after the war, which was too huge to handle for the CIG (Central Intelligence Group, 1941).
The CIA had several problems with the directors in the beginning, many civilians and amateurs. First with the rise of A.Dulles it began to grow further. Of course, the CIA had several problems in the 60's.
With the coming of W.Colby in 1973, all illegal activities ended and the CIA formed new objectives. After the departure of the old, radical staff, CIA is constantly getting better.
The DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency), founded in 1961, being a military organization, began soon to compete with the CIA. Over 95% of the analyses are from the military sector and the final result is posted to all sections of the defense, even to the CIA. Beside of DIA every military section has its own service - (AI - Army Intelligence, AFI - Air Force Intelligence, ONI - Office of Naval Intelligence). Even the commission for nuclear energy has its own service.
The NSA (National Security Agency), founded in 1952 to oversee communications, takes a special place in cryptology and technical equipment.
All services are subordinated to the NSC (National Security Council), which was founded in 1947 and its function is similar to the British JIC - to coordinate all services to fight the enemy (in the past, mainly USSR). NSA is informing the president, who controls it.
