4.2.1945 - 11.2.1945 Roosvelt, Churchill and Stalin meet at Yalta. All agreed that Germany wound not be divided after the war, but remained in occupation zones (which included France) until it could be unified. Stalin promised to hold free elections in Poland and help out with Japan.

12.4.1945 F.D.Roosvelt dies in Warm Springs, Georgia. Harry S.Truman becomes president of USA

8.5.1945 End of World War II in Europe

17.6.1945 - 2.8.1945 USSR (Stalin, Molotov), USA (Truman, J.Byrnes) UK (Churchill/Atlee, A.Eden) meet in Potsdam.

26.6.1945 Signing of the founding UN Charter in San Francisco by 51 states.

6.8.1945 - 9.8.1945 A-bomb drops on Japan cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

14.9.1945 Capitulation of Japan

6.12.1945 US and UK agree at a lend of 3.75 billion $ for the recovery of British economy.

4.3.1947 France and UK sign a treaty about common ways in dealing with international and security policy.

12.3.1947 Announcement of Truman's Doctrine (supporting democracy) - leading to financial support for legitim governments in Turkey and Greece

22.3.1947 President Harry S. Truman issues the Truman Lovalty Order, which made it possible to run checks on state employees for their loyality to the Constitution and possible collaboration on sabotage acts

5.6.1947 Start of the supportive Marshall's plan. (state secretary gen. George C.Marshall, in Harvard)

.7.1947 July issue of "Foreign Affairs" prints an article by G.Kennan about "containment of russian expansive tendencies"

26.7.1947 National Security Act The National Security Act ordered the self-governing parts of the armed forces under the new department of defense. James V.Forrestal becomes first secretary of defense. National Security Board founded, which included the CIA.

5.10.1947 Founding of Informbyro - international organization of communist parties

29.11.1947 UN Great Assembly acknowledges the division of Palestine to arabic and jewish state. On the same day riots between Arabs and Jews broke out on the british mandate territory.

14.5.1948 After last British units left Palestine, Isreal was declared. However, its borders remained undefined.

2.11.1948 Truman re-elected president

18.1.1949 Foundment of the CMEA (Council for Mutual Economic Assistance)

4.4.1949 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) entered by 11 states.

12.5.1949 USSR ends the blockade of West Berlin

23.5.1949 Forming of West Germany

23.9.1949 First Soviet atom bomb test.
